Turkish Urban Legends No. 5: The Haunted Apartment of Antalya

In Antalya, there is a four-story building with sixteen apartments where no one lived for years, or according to those who make the claim, no one could live. This apartment building, which faces a cemetery and is allegedly built on top of another cemetery, has only a small grocery store on its ground floor. The employees say that when they arrive in the morning, they find shelves toppled over and items moved from their places.

No one wants to move into this building, which was in the public eye for a period—a place where strange sounds were reportedly heard after midnight, where doors and windows supposedly moved on their own. According to another claim, a woman who once lived in this building went mad and killed her mother. It’s alleged that paranormal entities were responsible for this incident as well.

What’s going on in the haunted apartment in Antalya? Is it just a place used by engagement-seekers trying to attract attention? Or is it truly a location that hosts paranormal entities? Or perhaps an apartment building with an entirely different story?

The passage you just read is the opening of Episode 6 of the Kat 3 Daire 5 podcast.

In Antalya’s Kırcami neighborhood, the apartment building across from the cemetery had shops open on its lower floors, but for years no one lived on the upper floors. This situation naturally gave rise to rumors of a haunted house, a ghost-ridden apartment. Stories about items being knocked over in the ground-floor shops and windows shattering for no apparent reason spread as an urban legend. So much was written about this apartment that a film was even made about it. Directed by famous Turkish rock artist Emre Aydın, the film is called “Cinni: Uyanış” (Cinni: Awakening).

The apartment building where supposedly no one could live now houses several businesses. One of them is a driving school—and rather fittingly, its branch name is “Peri Şubesi” (Fairy Branch).

With an auto parts shop, a security company, a tripe soup restaurant, and even a wedding hall now occupying the building, it seems to have moved quite far from its dark past.

This time, we decided to try something different and asked ChatGPT, the popular AI of recent times, to write us a story based on this information.

The Ritual

A story generated by ChatGPT based on the urban legend

In the bustling city center of Antalya, across from the cemetery, there stood an ordinary apartment building. But this building’s story was terrifying enough to make anyone’s blood run cold.

Once upon a time, there was a cemetery where this apartment now stands. But one day, it was decided that the gravestones would be removed and an apartment building would be constructed in their place. When construction began, the workers started feeling a strange energy. Some felt as though the spirits of the cemetery had descended upon them.

When the apartment was completed, everything seemed normal at first. But over time, strange events began to occur. Some said they heard peculiar sounds in the building’s corridors. Others claimed to see a shadowy entity at night. Many began to believe that this apartment was cursed.

The residents of the apartment began to disappear, one by one. First, a woman vanished. Then, a man’s body was found outside the building. The remaining residents noticed that the events were strangely moving toward them.

As the days passed, those who remained in the apartment found themselves in the midst of bizarre occurrences. Some couldn’t bring themselves to leave. Others disappeared and never returned. Eventually, the apartment was abandoned and remained empty for years.

But now, the apartment has been converted into a business center. Shops have opened and people have entered once again. Yet some have begun experiencing strange events. There are those who believe the apartment is still cursed. Who knows, perhaps this building’s story will repeat itself one day.
