If this article were published on another site, it would probably be titled “clich\u00e9 locations we’re sick of seeing in horror films.” But as we’ve discussed many times on our podcasts, we believe that the right dose of clich\u00e9s is necessary in horror films. That’s why I felt this title was more appropriate for today’s article. Now I’m going to tell you about those clich\u00e9 horror film locations that appear in many movies\u2014places where the moment we see them, we know things are about to go sideways.<\/p>\n
It’s no surprise that this list starts with old mansions. We invariably see these estates in films with stories centered around aristocratic families. Typically, after families who’ve lived in the mansion or even castle for centuries move out, a newly married and wealthy couple purchases the home, and events unfold from there. In fact, the “haunted” or possessed states of these mansions and castles remind me of how the political-economic atmosphere influences folk horror beliefs. While in Turkey we generally see possession cases focusing more on people than places, in regions where aristocracy, private property, and settled life have deeper historical roots, we more often encounter malevolent entities haunting houses and castles. After all, to talk about an entity that’s haunted the same house for 500 years, you first need a location that’s been standing in the same spot for 500 years.
